Tasks or Operations - A Russian military officer receives three and a half years behind bars for spying.
A German army captain received a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence in Düsseldorf for spying for Russia. The court agreed with the prosecution's demand, who claimed the officer willingly served Russia to give them an advantage in warfare.
The 54-year-old admitted his guilt at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court. Prosecutors stated the career soldier was devoted to Russia, providing them with crucial military information. They described it as "almost servilely serving" the enemy.
The captain's actions had potentially compromised national security, the prosecution argued. The man acted as a spy for a ruthless and aggressive state.
However, if he had divulged state secrets as well, he would've faced life imprisonment.
The defendant's lawyer stated the officer had ruined years of exemplary military service in four days. "Four days of betrayal, where he crossed all red lines. Four days of total failure."
In a hectic professional world, his media consumption shifted to Telegram and TikTok. These platforms exposed him to misinformation and disjointed quotes. At times, he was disconnected from reality. He is currently not a member of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party.
The captain defended himself by saying the fear of a nuclear escalation in the Ukrainian war drove him. "It's the biggest pile of manure I've ever built in my life," he asserted in court. He attributed his actions to a depression brought on by chronic overwork, which affected his rational thinking.
German police arrested the man on August 9th in Koblenz and held him in pre-trial detention.
