Railway track - A rail excavator toppled on Wangerooge, causing the suspension of ferry journeys.
The ferry transportation to and from the Eastern Frisian island of Wangerooge had a temporary hold due to an incident with a railway excavator from the island railway on a Thursday. The East Frisian island railway connects the ferry terminal in the south of Wangerooge with the island community via a four-kilometer-long, single-track line passing through the National Park North Sea. The accident took place during maintenance activities on the track on Wednesday, informed a spokesperson for the railway on Thursday. The excavator tipped over. Luckily, there were no casualties. The circumstances of the accident were initially puzzling.
The ferry service to the island and the island railway are managed by Deutsche Bahn via a subsidiary. To prevent passengers stranded on Wangerooge, all morning ferry trips originating from Harlesiel were first called off. No journeys were made to the mainland from Wangerooge. Passengers were notified of the inconveniences.
Nevertheless, the ferry service resumed at noon, clarified the spokesperson. The excavator was to be repositioned onto the rails. Reportedly, over 200,000 travelers use the island transport to travel to and from the easternmost inhabited East Frisian island annually.
