Train track route - A rail excavator has tipped over on Wangerooge island, causing disruption to ferry services.
The ferry trips to and from the Eastern Frisian island of Wangerooge have been stopped temporarily after a work accident involving an excavator used by the island's railroad. The train connects the ferry station in the southern part of Wangerooge with the main town, through a single-track stretch that measures four kilometers. This railroad runs through the Wadden Sea National Park. The accident took place on Wednesday while some maintenance work was being done on the track. Officials have confirmed that the excavator overturned, but luckily there were no injuries. The specifics about this accident were initially vague.
The ferry service to Wangerooge, and the train, are managed by German Railways through their subsidiary. As a result of this event, the plans for three morning ferry trips scheduled from Harlesiel were scrapped. Additionally, there weren't any ferries leaving from Wangerooge for the mainland. Passengers were kept informed about the situation. "We are trying our hardest to have the rail line back up and running again quickly," said the official spokesperson.
It is estimated that the rail transport service on the easternmost inhabited East Frisian island has close to 200,000 passengers every year.
