The world's population grows, creating more demand for food and water. - A nursing home experiences an increase in infections resulting in the death of three residents.

A nursing home in Oyten, part of the Verden district, has experienced a tragedy due to an illness outbreak. Three elderly residents, aged over 80, have sadly passed away. Five other residents were rushed to the hospital, as informed by the Verden district administration on Sunday. The nursing home had notified everyone on Friday about an increase in unusual respiratory infections, accompanied by feverish colds. In total, 19 individuals - residents, and employees alike - have been displaying symptoms like coughing, weakness, and fever. The health department in the county promptly ordered the isolations of the sick, implementing enhanced hygiene measures.

On Saturday, lab tests conducted by the State Health Office in Hannover revealed the presence of parainfluenza and rhinoviruses within the samples. In some cases, double infections were found, but the exact means of contracting the viruses remained unclear. Jutta Dreyer, the head of the Verden health department, commented, "These viruses are prevalent in the general population and are not uncommon. They can cause flu-like symptoms and colds. However, in the elderly, their presence can become severe, given the existing health issues and a weakened immune system, frequently leading to bacterial superinfections, as seen in several cases at the nursing home."

Although there were signs of recovery among some nursing home residents who were in the hospital or remained in the nursing home, the infection situation was still unresolved on Sunday, per the health department's report.
