Halle's historical park garden, Reichardts Garten, will be getting a facelift, thanks to a €1.2 million grant from a federal program focused on adapting urban areas to climate change. The city shared the news on Wednesday following the decision made by the budget committee in the German parliament. The park, reportedly 3.65 hectares large, has been significantly impacted by the effects of climate change in recent years, particularly from intense droughts and the park's rocky subsoil. Water damage is also a prevalent issue after heavy rain events.

Located in Halle, Reichardts Garten was established in 1791 as a private garden for composer Johann Friedrich Reichardt (modeled after an English landscape garden). It is rumored that renowned German authors like Johann Wolfgang Goethe frequented the site. Since 1902, the garden has been under the ownership of the city.

This federal program, "Adapting Urban Spaces to Climate Change," seeks to endorse local initiatives aimed at creating or revitalizing parks and green spaces that promote climate adaptation and natural climate protection.

The refurbishment of Reichardts Garten, a significant part of Halle's nature and history, is supported by municipalities across Saxony-Anhalt as they contribute to the €1.2 million grant. This climate change adaptation project, which includes mitigating water damage and addressing drought effects, aligns with the Bundestag's efforts to address the environment. This revitalized park, visited by literary greats like Johann Wolfgang Goethe in the past, will serve as a testament to Halle's commitment to preserving its climate and nature, adding another gem to the city's hall.
