Near the Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, a violent clash occurred at a refugee shelter, leading to the death of a security guard. The perpetrator managed to escape, and the police responded by deploying a large force to the area. A suspect in the crime, known to the authorities, is being sought by the homicide investigation team. Details about the circumstances, motive, and weapon involved in the crime are still unknown, and neither the nationalities of the parties involved have been disclosed.

The incident occurred at a communal living space for asylum seekers in Geschwister-Scholl-Straße, around 4:00 a.m. on a recent morning. Previously, a hotel named "Schlossgarten" operated at the location. Police are also conducting a search in the nearby Sanssouci Park for the perpetrator.

The suspect in the crime has been identified, but their capture has not been successful yet. Theresia Jonitz, a spokeswoman for the Potsdam prosecutor's office, mentioned that the perpetrator is "on the run." A homicide investigation team from the police directorate west is handling the case. For now, there is no perceived danger to the community, the police stated.

The injured security guard was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later passed away. The Potsdam prosecutor's office is conducting an investigation under a murder charge. Evidence collection at the crime scene was implemented, according to officials. Amidst the very early stages of the investigation, authorities have decided against making further statements to the public.

Hordes of police officers arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and gathered clues and manhunted for the perpetrator throughout the morning. They thoroughly searched gardens, behind bushes, and trees, employing a search dog and suited-up colleagues behind barricades. A representative for the city shared that Mayor Mike Schubert (SPD) was keeping updated on the situation.

A fire broke out in the Potsdam-West communal accommodation in late February, leading to the evacuation of the building, according to police records.
