People are being called upon to aid in the discovery of grass snakes throughout the nation. ABS, or the Association for Amphibian and Reptile Habitat Protection Baden-Württemberg, is seeking the help of those who encounter these snakes to report their sightings. Concern about the decreasing grass snake population has been expressed by this organization. According to ABS, "It is crucial to identify their locations first so we can put adequate protective measures in place."
Grass snakes boast a distinctive black zigzag pattern on their backs, which can be seen in different hues. Also known as the black grass snake, these creatures are venomous, but bites are uncommon. Judith Grünewald from ABS explains, "They are very timid and non-aggressive animals." If a snake bite does happen, medical attention is required.
The snakes are suffering due to the loss of their natural habitats, according to the statement. Climate change is preventing their expansion and separating populations in cold and damp regions. The decline of grass snakes has been ongoing in Germany for quite some time, and in Baden-Württemberg, this is especially noticeable. In Ostalb and the southern Black Forest, they are close to extinction while having the most stable populations in the moors of Upper Swabia and the northern Black Forest.
These snakes are significant for the ecosystem, as Grünewald explains, "They consume a lot of mice and help maintain a balance in their habitat." Additionally, the presence of grass snakes in moors is a sign of a thriving ecosystem.
