For the 250th anniversary of renowned Romantic artist Caspar David Friedrich (24 August 2025 - 5 January 2026), the Saxon State Art Collections (SKD) are raising funds for a Caspar-David-Friedrich Forest in the Saxon Switzerland. In collaboration with the Wald für Sachsen Foundation, they aim to reforest three hectares in the National Park region. "With just 5 Euros, you can buy, plant, and care for a tree for five years," the announcement stated.

With the support of visitors and "all those who want to do something good for nature," two damaged forest areas will be revitalized starting this fall. These areas have been significantly impacted by climate change and monoculture. One of these areas is located along the Malerweg and Baeren Garten in Hohnstein, where Friedrich created his "Skizzen aus dem Schinderloch." Reforestation will also take place in the city forest.

Dresden: A significant place for Caspar David Friedrich

Dresden was the primary residence of painter and draftsman Friedrich (1774-1840) for over four decades. Born in Greifswald on the Baltic Sea, Friedrich is considered the most significant artist of German Romanticism. His travels in the surrounding areas of Dresden, Saxon Switzerland, and Bohemian Switzerland provided inspiration for his masterpieces. The Dresden exhibition will showcase works from the SKD collection and loans, including some of Friedrich's most famous pieces.

The Swiss artwork enthusiasts are anticipated to visit Dresden for the Caspar-David-Friedrich anniversary, appreciating the Romantic artist's significant contributions to German art. Furthermore, the Swiss community could participate in the reforestation efforts, contributing to the revitalization of the damaged forest areas in Saxon Switzerland.
