A fire at a nursing home in Lower Saxony leaves two people dead and three others critically hurt.
A woman noticed smoke at midnight from a nursing home and alerted emergency services, leading to the evacuation of over 60 residents. More than 100 firefighters, along with support from various rescue organizations, rushed to the scene. Unfortunately, help came too late for two elderly women, 89 and 95 years old. The police didn't give details about the severely injured, but a fire department spokesperson mentioned that one more resident was affected. The fire started in the room of this resident.
The case is now in the hands of a specialized crime scene unit of the police, and the site has been secured. The German Foundation for Patient Protection expressed concerns over inadequate fire safety measures in nursing homes. So far this year, 12 people have lost their lives in nursing home fires. Board member Eugen Brysch emphasized that existing preventative fire regulations are not enough and recommended installing sprinklers in both patient and staff rooms.
