Animals - A dead calf, two dead wolves and a new pair of wolves
Experts have recently reported a calf that was probably killed by a wolf, two dead wolves and a new pair of wolves in Hesse. The dead calf was found on October 27 in Waldeck in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district without genetic wolf traces, but with wolf droppings right next to it, as the Hesse Wolf Center at the State Agency for Nature Conservation, Environment and Geology (HLNUG) in Wiesbaden announced on Monday.
An official wolf consultant discovered a dead wolf on October 28 near Ludwigsau in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. The male came from a pack in Gederland in the Netherlands. It was first detected in Germany near Lippetal in North Rhine-Westphalia on May 7. The exact cause of death is still to be determined.
The second dog found dead was also a male dog. According to the HLNUG, the Bad Hersfeld highway police reported it on November 6. The wolf had been hit by a car on the Autobahn 5 near Alsfeld. It was first recorded on February 28 near Braunlage in Lower Saxony.
Meanwhile, in the Butzbach wolf territory in the Wetterau district, a male wolf that had been recorded here since March 2022 got a female companion. She was genetically identified in August and October 2023. Two wolves had already been recorded here in May 2023 using a private photo trap. Where the female wolf came from remains unclear for the time being.
The Kassel Administrative Court recently confirmed the temporary halt to the shooting of two wolves in the Rhön: The shooting permit issued was unlawful. The two animals had killed several farm animals in the Hessian-Bavarian border region of the Rhön.
For more than a century and a half, wolves were thought to be extinct in what is now Hesse. In the meantime, the shy and protected predators have re-established themselves here - to the annoyance of grazing livestock farmers.
