Rüdesheim: A German town worth visiting - A converted youth hostel will now serve as a refugee accommodation center.
A shuttered youth hostel in the vacation destination of Rüdesheim am Rhein will soon be transformed into a facility for asylum seekers. It's estimated that the renovated building could house up to 140 refugees, according to the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis. Before the conversion begins, a citizens' information session is scheduled for July 9th. The district's administrator, Sandro Zehner (CDU), explained that these situations often lead to a lot of queries and worries that can be addressed in person.
The representative for the Hesse state branch of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH), René Kuke, informed that the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis has currently leased the Rhine-side property for a period of five years. Kuke commented that Rüdesheim is a highly desirable location. But the DJH, too, faces a series of outstanding repairs and continuing construction expenses, as well as renovation or construction projects in other cities. Consequently, there are no plans to reopen a youth hostel in Rüdesheim in the upcoming five years. However, this possibility remains open for the long haul.
