A 53-year-old individual caught red-handed driving a school bus under the influence of drugs in Overath, a village in the Oberberg district, has been removed from the road, as announced by the police. They conducted a routine check on Thursday morning and observed the bus driver's unusual behavior, such as not signaling when turning, leaving the bus stop, or using hazard lights while students were leaving the bus. When the police approached him in a side street, "physical manifestations" that typically accompany stimulant consumption were noticed.

An impromptu drug test confirmed the use of amphetamines. The man was taken to a medical professional's office for blood work, the results of which are still not known. According to a police spokesperson, the bus was handed over to a temporary driver, and the 53-year-old is not permitted to operate it for now. The specific number of students he was transporting was initially withheld, but it is confirmed that the vehicle was indeed filled with children.

The incident occurred in North Rhine-Westphalia, a region known for its strict traffic laws. Due to the drug influence, the bus veered off course several times, causing traffic delays near the local school. The police have launched an investigation into the case, as incidents of drug influence in public service roles are considered a serious form of crime. The bus driver, if convicted, may face significant consequences, including a ban from operating school buses in the future.
