Unknown individuals conducted an explosion on an ATM in the Emsland district. The culprits then took off, as stated by the authorities. Initially, it was uncertain if they managed to snatch any money. The blast occurred during the night inside a supermarket's entrance vestibule in Papenburg. The police secured the area with a perimeter. At first, the extent of the damage wasn't clearly established.
ATMs are frequently subject to such attacks. Typically, the apparatus gets uprooted, and the money compartments are exposed. Many criminals make a swift escape in high-powered automobiles. The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reported 95 attempted or successful ATM explosions in Lower Saxony alone in 2022 - more than in any other federal state.
The authorities are now working closely with the Police to investigate the explosion. Given the rising frequency of such incidents, increased security measures for ATMs are being proposed.
