Enigmatic being - A 2.2-meter moonfish surfaces on the shore of Oregon.

A gigantic and uncommon moonfish was discovered washed ashore at a beach in the state of Oregon in the northwest of the United States. This enormous 2.2-meter-long sea creature seems to be a Mola tecta, disclosed by the Seaside Aquarium on Friday (local time). A New Zealand researcher reached this verdict upon inspecting the images. The species was only described in 2017.

Moonfish: Discs and Huge Weights

Moonfish are part of a diverse family. Mola tecta is thought to dwell predominantly in the temperate and tropical waters of the Southern Hemisphere. Like other members of its kind, it has a laterally flattened body and head. What sets it apart are the powerful fins on either side, which are positioned opposite to each other. What's fascinating is that these individuals can weigh a significant amount – even several tons.
