State Office of Criminal Investigation - 93 proceedings following concerted action against "cybergrooming"
Following a concerted undercover operation against so-called "cybergrooming", 93 proceedings were initiated according to the State Criminal Police Office (LKA). For over two weeks, LKA employees posed as children on the internet and communicated with people who sometimes sexually harassed them or tried to coerce them into sexual acts.
"The figures clearly show how big and dirty the swamp is in which my investigators are fishing here," said LKA chief Ingo Wünsch. "New technical and legal possibilities enable us to exert greater pressure on the perpetrators, but the sheer number of perpetrators and opportunities to commit crimes is giving us a lot of trouble," says Wünsch.
In the current operation, the LKA employees focused primarily on the popular social network Instagram. As a dpa reporter was able to observe on site, the specialists operated several accounts at the same time - via which they wrote as "pretend children", primarily with strange men. According to the LKA, 63 of the ads came from contacts via traditional chat forums and another 30 from contacts via social media.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, where the operation took place, the majority of the 63 instances of "cybergrooming" identified through traditional chat forums occurred. The LKA's cybercrime unit in Düsseldorf played a significant role in the operation. Despite the success of the operation, the LKA chief expressed concerns about the increasing number of perpetrators and opportunities for criminal activity on the Internet.
