Statistics - 88,100 people moved in from abroad on balance
In the past year, according to the Statistical Office, there were a net gain of 88,100 people from abroad in the Southwest. This represents the fourth highest inflow across the border in the past 30 years, the statisticians reported. In 2023, there were 288,800 net inflows from abroad and 200,700 outflows abroad.
From Ukraine, there was a net gain of 22,000 people – this is significantly fewer than the previous year (plus 130,100), but more than from all other countries. Following Ukraine were Turkey (plus 16,300), Syria (plus 9,300), Afghanistan (plus 6,200), India (plus 4,900), and Kosovo (plus 4.700). However, there were noticeably negative migration balances with Switzerland (minus 6,300) and Austria (minus 1,100).
When inflows from other federal states are added, Baden-Württemberg recorded a total of 405,700 inflows across the state border in the course of the year 2023. 322,100 people left the Southwest. The population growth resulting from immigration, according to the Statistical Office, was 83,600, which, according to their statements, was significantly lower than in the record year 2022, but higher than the results of the previous years 2016 to 2021 (between plus 29,800 and plus 76,100).

- Despite the significant decrease in net inflows from Ukraine compared to the previous year, it still contributed to the highest increase in population among foreign countries in the Southwest, with a net gain of 22,000 people.
- The State Office in Baden-Württemberg reported that despite having the fourth highest inflow across the border in the past 30 years, the population growth due to immigration in 2023 was significantly lower than in the record year 2022 but higher than the results from 2016 to 2021.
- Interestingly, while Ukraine led in population increase among foreign countries, there were noticeable negative migration balances with neighboring countries like Switzerland and Austria, with a net loss of 6,300 and 1,100 people, respectively.
- The Stuttgart region in Baden-Württemberg, located in the Southwest, experienced a population growth of 83,600 in 2023 due to immigration, making it the second largest state in terms of population growth in Germany after the state of Bavaria.
