Duchy of Lauenburg - 83-year-old from Büchen falls for "shock caller"

Once again, a senior citizen has fallen victim to so-called shock callers. An 83-year-old woman from Büchen in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg handed over an amount in the mid five-figure range to a stranger in order to spare her daughter an alleged prison sentence, the police announced on Thursday.

According to the police, unknown persons had called the senior citizen several times on Wednesday and demanded that she pay bail for her daughter, who had allegedly caused a fatal car accident. The 83-year-old handed over the money to a woman dressed in dark clothing who was at least 60 years old.

The scam was uncovered when the victim phoned her daughter in the afternoon. She learned that the alleged accident had never happened, said a police spokeswoman.

According to current police information, there were further "shock calls" in Büchen on Wednesday. The police are asking for information.
