Feature films - 82 films at the Sundance Festival: German documentary in competition
82 feature films from 24 countries will be screened at the Sundance Festival in the US state of Utah in January. The organizers of the largest US film festival for independent productions announced the selection on Wednesday (local time). The festival, founded by Robert Redford, is scheduled to run from January 18 to 28 in the winter sports region of Park City. It is being held for the 40th time.
Since its inception, the festival has aimed to showcase and celebrate risk-taking artists and bold projects, Redford said in a statement. This tradition will continue in 2024.
German productions are also taking part in the Sundance Festival. Among the ten candidates in the "World Cinema Documentary Competition" category is the documentary "Eternal you - Vom Ende der Endlichkeit". The film by directing duo Hans Block and Moritz Riesewieck ("The Cleaners") is celebrating its world premiere there. The documentary looks at start-ups that use artificial intelligence to create digital avatars to enable mourners to communicate with the deceased.
The new feature film by director Nora Fingscheidt ("Systemsprenger"), who brought actress Saoirse Ronan in front of the camera for the book adaptation "The Outrun", will also have its world premiere at the festival. The drama tells the story of an alcoholic woman in London who returns to her Scottish home island of Orkney.
Every year, well-known actors and Hollywood directors also come to Park City. This year, stars such as Kristen Stewart, Michael Fassbender, Pedro Pascal, Jesse Eisenberg and US director Steven Soderbergh will be presenting their indie films.
For many smaller films, the Sundance Festival is a springboard for finding distributors and a wider audience. In 2021, for example, the deaf drama "Coda" won the top prizes from the jury and the audience, and later "Coda" was celebrated as "Best Film" at the Oscars.
