A residential fire in Merseburg has claimed the life of a 72-year-old tenant. The cause of the fire, which started on the ground floor of the multi-family dwelling, remains unknown, according to police. The 72-year-old lived alone in the building.

Investigations into the cause of the fire will continue in the coming days, and "extensive criminal technical examinations" will be conducted. The building was heavily sooted by the fire. The total property damage has not yet been determined by the police.
