Left-wing scene - 600 left-wing demonstrators march through St. Pauli - "Free Maja"

Several hundred demonstrators from the left scene marched through Hamburg's Schanzenviertel on Friday evening. They demanded freedom for "Maja". The non-binary person is in custody in Budapest - due to an attack on a right-wing rally in the Hungarian capital last year.

According to the police, the demonstration in Hamburg remained peaceful, although pyrotechnics were used occasionally. The demonstrators marched from the Red Flora over Stresemannstraße towards St. Pauli, ending their demonstration at the Altona Town Hall around 21.00 hours. The assembly leader declared the demonstration over. The police were present in large numbers.

The Federal Constitutional Court had prohibited the extradition of the 23-year-old suspected left-wing extremist to Hungary - however, the decision came too late. "Maja" had already been handed over to the Hungarian authorities.

In Budapest, a group of activists staged a protest in support of "Maja," demanding their release from custody. The pyrotechnics used during a similar demonstration in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel recently drew attention from local authorities. Despite the massive presence of police in Hamburg's St. Pauli during the left-scene demonstration, they kept the situation under control.
