In the first half of the year, there have been 60 piracy attacks and attempted attacks on World Oceans, according to the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) based in London.
The number of incidents is therefore at a similar level as in previous years: In the comparison period of 2023, there were 65 incidents, in 2022 there were 58, and in 2021 there were 68. The IMB is an organization of the International Chamber of Commerce.
However, the use of violence against crew members has significantly increased: In the first half of the year, 85 people were taken hostage. In the comparison period, this was only 36.
"The piracy risk at sea remains high, and the threat to the lives and safety of crews has significantly increased," said the Germany General Secretary of the International Chamber of Commerce, Oliver Wieck.
