60 people protest at A20 bridge for moorland protection
Several dozen people campaigned on Sunday near the A20 highway near Tribsees for better local transport and more protection for the moor and marshland areas. Among other things, several posters were put up on a bridge over the A20, a police spokesman said on Sunday. The posters read, for example, "There could be a train station here", "Sustainable mobility for MV" and "Moor protection - climate protection - stop drainage". Around 60 people had gathered for the registered action near the A20, the spokesperson added.
Originally, the environmentalists wanted to meet directly on the highway for their day of action and also dance there. Some participants wanted to dress up as moor frogs and abseil down from the bridge. However, this was not permitted. The gathering was therefore moved to the state road 19, which runs over the A20. This was agreed by the district of Vorpommern-Rügen, the Greifswald Administrative Court and the alliance represented by a lawyer.
The demonstration participants had met not far from the spot that had spectacularly collapsed over a length of around 90 meters in autumn 2017. Pictures of the huge hole went around the world. According to a report by the Technical University of Berlin, in addition to the construction technology of the road section, high stress and a drop in the groundwater had also contributed to this. After several years of work, the section between the Bad Sülze and Tribsees junctions has been open to traffic on both sides again since the end of June.
The environmental activists decided to hold their demonstrations on the state road 19 instead of the A20 due to restrictions, advocating for sustainable mobility, moor protection, and climate protection. Despite the relocation, the traffic around the area was significantly affected, causing disruptions and delays.
