- 500 litres of water in Frankfurt Cathedral: ceiling vaults flooded
In Frankfurt Cathedral, firefighters had to pump out hundreds of liters of water. A ceiling vault of the house of worship was temporarily flooded with around 500 liters of water, as the fire department reported. It had to be pumped out using special equipment.
The cause was likely a blocked downspout that caused a backup and facilitated water seepage into the vault. The damage was discovered when someone noticed a water stain in an area behind the altar, a fire department spokesperson said. "Of course, you look up first in that case."
The water had soaked into the stone wool in the vault. At one point over the weekend, around 40 personnel were busy removing the stone wool and repairing the damage. The extent of the damage is still to be determined.
Despite the water incident at Frankfurt Cathedral, the restoration efforts continued over the weekend. Around 40 personnel worked tirelessly to remove the soaked stone wool and repair the damage, ensuring that the weekend was dedicated to restoring the historical site.
