Until September 15th, certain incoming freshmen can still apply for a financial boost to kickstart their studies in the upcoming semester. Those who are financially less well-off and are starting a degree at a state or state-recognized Thuringian university for the first time have a chance to receive a one-time payment of 500 euros through the "StudyThuringiaPlus" program.

"This money can be used, for example, for urgently needed literature, language courses, or even a new laptop," said Christian Schaft, the higher education spokesperson for the Left party faction in the state parliament. "Programs like startup aid would be unnecessary if there were a secure training allowance," he criticized. He called on the federal government to initiate a fundamental reform.

Thuringia Student Services website provides detailed information about the program's requirements and application forms. Generally, those eligible for support under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG) also have a chance to receive startup aid.

In 2023, according to the State Statistical Office, 25,269 students, pupils, and students in Thuringia received BAföG, an increase of 4.8% compared to the previous year.

The "StudyThuringiaPlus" program offers a financial injection of 500 euros as a one-time payment to financially less fortunate students who are beginning a degree at a state or state-recognized Thuringian university for the first time. This financial injection can be utilized for essentials such as necessary textbooks, language courses, or even purchasing a new laptop.
