Hanover Region - 50-year-old provisionally arrested after apartment fire

Following an apartment fire in Hanover in which a senior citizen died, a 50-year-old woman has been provisionally arrested. Police are investigating the woman for manslaughter and aggravated arson, officials announced on Tuesday. The 50-year-old was herself slightly injured in the fire on New Year's Day in Nordstadt.

A resident had noticed smoke coming from a window of an apartment building on Monday afternoon and alerted the fire department. The body of the 74-year-old tenant was discovered during the extinguishing work. The 50-year-old woman, who was also in the apartment, was rescued by the firefighters.

The injuries sustained by the deceased could indicate that she was not at fault. According to the police, the accused is currently still in hospital and is being guarded there. The authorities then want to check whether an arrest warrant will be issued for her. The background is still unclear.
