Upper Franconia - 47-year-old dies in hospital after house fire

A 47-year-old man has died in hospital after a house fire. The cause of the fire in Geroldsgrün (Hof district) is still unclear.

The man was pulled unconscious from the attic of a burning apartment building on Tuesday evening, police said on Wednesday. Two residents had previously tried to rescue the 47-year-old, but the smoke and heat were already too strong, according to the police. Only the fire department with protective equipment was able to get the man out of the apartment. However, according to the police, the resuscitation attempts in the ambulance were unsuccessful and the 47-year-old died shortly afterwards in hospital.

Around 70 firefighters attended the fire on Wednesday night and seven had to be treated for mild smoke inhalation afterwards. The fire caused property damage of 200,000 euros.

The incident occurred in Geroldsgrün, which is located in the Hof district of the German state of Bavaria, specifically in the region known as Upper Franconia. Despite the efforts of two residents and the immediate response from the local fire department, the 47-year-old man did not survive the house fire. Subsequently, the Bavarian police launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
