38 cannabis farming associations to start

Since July, cannabis cultivation associations can submit applications for an operating license. There is no sign of a actual boom in the Southwest so far.

In the southwest, 38 clubs have so far applied for a permit to cultivate cannabis. Many inquiries are also coming in from the so-called cultivation associations to prepare applications, as reported by the spokesperson for the Freiburg government presidency. The authority is responsible for permits throughout the state.

"No permits or rejection decisions have been made yet," the spokesperson said. Even with well-prepared documents from the clubs, improvements may be necessary. Previously, the "Southwest Press" had reported this.

The government presidency had announced in June that it expected to receive a three-digit number of applications from the cultivation associations in the state - at least 100.

After cannabis was legalized for adults and private cultivation with numerous regulations on April 1, a second stage came into effect at the beginning of last month. Non-commercial cultivation associations with up to 500 members are now allowed to start. Adults can cultivate cannabis together and share it among themselves for personal use. However, the clubs must first apply for a permit from the authorities. Regular inspections are also planned.

Comparatively many applicants along the eastern border

"It is currently not possible to say when the first permits will be issued," said the spokesperson for the Freiburg authority. So far, no clear regional focus among the cultivation clubs has been identified. Comparatively many applicants are located in a strip about 25 to 30 kilometers wide along the eastern border of Baden-Württemberg.

The authority is checking, among other things, whether the responsible persons of the cultivation associations are reliable. The health and prevention concept of the clubs is also being examined. The production site must also be particularly secure.

With the 1st of April, the possession and consumption of cannabis for adults became legal in Germany. However, sharing and selling it remains prohibited. Those who are 18 years and older may keep up to 50 grams at home and carry a maximum of 25 grams outside. This explicitly refers to personal use.

The spokesperson for the Freiburg government presidency mentioned an influx of inquiries from cultivation associations nearby, hoping to prepare applications for permits in Freiburg. The region along the eastern border of Baden-Württemberg, specifically a 25 to 30 kilometer wide strip, has seen comparatively many applicants seeking to cultivate cannabis in Freiburg.
