Statistics - 33 road deaths so far - fewer than last year

The number of people who died in road traffic accidents in Berlin is once again comparatively low this year. By mid-December, 33 people had lost their lives, according to the police. Last year as a whole, there were 34 road deaths, the lowest number in recent decades. There were 40 deaths in 2021 and 50 the year before. Until the beginning of the millennium, the figures were much higher.

In the current year, twelve cyclists, eleven pedestrians, five motorcyclists or scooter riders, four car drivers and one wheelchair user died. There were 24 men and 9 women.

The number of fatalities, which fluctuates greatly each year, only tells us a limited amount about the specific dangers of road traffic. The total number of accidents and the number of seriously and slightly injured people are more decisive.

So far, the figures up to September are available. According to these figures, 99,088 road accidents were registered, around 3,500 more than in the same period last year. Around 90 percent of the accidents only resulted in fender benders and no injuries. However, a total of 10,732 people were slightly injured in accidents in the first nine months of the year and 1583 people were seriously injured, almost four percent fewer than in 2022.

In large federal states with many rural roads where people drive fast, significantly more people die in relation to the number of inhabitants than in large cities. At the same time, road traffic has become much safer in recent years thanks to modern safety systems such as airbags and reinforced car bodies, faster rescue operations, more speed checks and tougher penalties.
