3000 people demonstrate against operation in the Gaza Strip
Accompanied by numerous police officers, around 3,000 people protested against the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip in Essen on Friday evening, according to the police. The pro-Palestinian demonstration had been registered by a private individual. The demonstration was "very loud and very emotional, but peaceful", said a police spokesperson. No criminal offenses were reported. The police had issued a number of conditions and announced that they would take action if the demonstration was not peaceful.
Several demonstrations relating to the Middle East conflict have also been announced for this Saturday in North Rhine-Westphalia. In Düsseldorf, the police are preparing for a rally with 1000 participants registered by a private individual. It is due to start at 2.30 p.m. near the main railway station. Pro-Palestinian groups are promoting participation in the demonstration on social networks.
At least 750 people are expected to take part in a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Münster from 2.00 pm. Rallies with several hundred participants have been registered in other cities.
On October 7, terrorists from Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, carried out a massacre of civilians in Israel. Since then, Israel's army has been attacking targets in the sealed-off coastal area with air strikes and ground troops.
The protests against the Israeli military operation in Gaza gained momentum, as announcements for more demonstrations relating to the Middle East conflict surfaced in North Rhine-Westphalia. On Saturday, conflicts between protesters and authorities could potentially arise, given the emotional nature of the gatherings in Düsseldorf and Münster, where 1000 and 750 people are expected to demonstrate, respectively.
