3.8 million people commute to work in the southwest
The number of commuters in Baden-Württemberg is increasing. Last year, 3.81 million people traveled to work across the borders of their place of residence, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday. This was an increase of 1.5 percent. Around 2.26 million people worked in the municipality in which they also lived.
Three of the 20 German cities with the highest number of commuters last year were in the southwest, namely Stuttgart (312,000 commuters), Mannheim (137,300) and Karlsruhe (130,400). The university cities of Ulm (80,800), Heidelberg (77,100) and Heilbronn (59,100) also attracted many employees from other municipalities.
Despite the rising traffic due to increased commuters, the labor market in the southwest continues to thrive. The railroad system has become a crucial mode of transport for many workers, with cars still dominating the commute.
