DVV Cup - 3:2 win against Lüneburg: BR Volleys advance to the cup final

The Berlin Volleys have taken the next step towards winning the German Volleyball Cup for the seventh time in their club's history. In the semi-final, the defending champions beat SVG Lüneburg 3:2 (25:20, 21:25, 25:19, 16:25, 15:11) in front of 3614 spectators in the Max-Schmeling-Halle after a five-set thriller. Their opponents in the final on March 3 in Mannheim will be Volleys Herrsching, who beat Grizzlys Giesen 3:0 (25:20, 25:14, 25:14) in the second semi-final.

Last season, the Berliners had already beaten the Lower Saxons 3:2 in the cup, albeit in the quarter-finals.

This time, the capital city club put in a strong performance in the first set against the Bundesliga runners-up. Ruben Schott, Timothee Carle and Johannes Tille created the decisive advantages with high service pressure. However, the hosts missed the start of the second set (2:8). They worked their way back to within one point (15:16), but were no longer able to turn the set in their favor.

The volleys only briefly saw the set equalizer as a wake-up call. They seemed to have things safely under control in the third period with an intermediate score of 22:11, but Lüneburg continued to fight back energetically and forced their opponents into a tie-break.

There, the BR Volleys opened up a three-point lead for the first time at 11:8 thanks to a point from captain Ruben Schott. The team then routinely saved itself for the finish. Marek Sotola converted the first match point with an ace.

The Final of the DVV Cup will be held in Mannheim, with Berlin Volleys taking on Volleys Herrsching. This marks the Berliners' second encounter with Volleys Herrsching in the DVV Cup, having previously won against them in the quarter-finals last season. The capitol city club demonstrated a strong performance in the first set of their semi-final match against SVG Lüneburg, dominating with high service pressure. Lüneburg, however, managed to force a tie-break in the third set, but Berlin Volleys ultimately secured a 3:2 win, advancement to the cup final, and a chance to defend their title in Berlin. The BR Volleys are now one step closer to potentially winning the German Volleyball Cup for the seventh time in their club's history. In contrast, Lüneburg, who were Bundesliga runners-up, will look to build on this experience for future cup competitions.
