Whitsun floods - 3.2 million euros in emergency flood aid paid out

Six weeks after the Pfingst flood in Saarland, more than 3.2 million Euros in emergency aid have been paid out to affected citizens. There have been 3,523 applications at the Saarland districts and the Saarbrücken Regional Association, according to the Saarland Landtag to the German Press Agency. Of these, 3,325 applications have been approved.

Emergency aid is intended to help affected people quickly over initial damages. The state pays half, and municipal associations and communes each 25 percent. The application deadline for flood relief up to 1,000 Euros expired at the end of June.

According to the Saarland Landtag, there are currently around 270 applications from flood victims without property damage insurance. It is expected that the number will increase. A financial aid of up to 75,000 Euros is granted in this case. Applications are still possible until the end of the year.

During the Pfingst weekend, people in Saarland and the southwest of Rhineland-Palatinate fought against floods and landslides. Heavy continuous rain caused flooding, landslides, and flooded streets and cellars. The Saarland was extensively affected: There were 5,000 interventions by police, fire departments, and aid organizations. A 67-year-old woman died due to a flood rescue operation in Saarbrücken.
