3:2 in stoppage time: Braunschweig win basement duel
Eintracht Braunschweig won a thrilling basement duel in the 2nd Bundesliga thanks to a goal in stoppage time. The team currently bottom of the table beat newly-promoted VfL Osnabrück 3:2 (1:1) late on Saturday, but deservedly so. Ermin Bicakcic scored the winning goal in front of 20,378 spectators in the eighth minute of stoppage time - and the goal was reviewed by the video assistant for several minutes afterwards. In the end, Daniel Scherning celebrated a successful debut as Braunschweig's third coach of the season - against his former club Osnabrück of all clubs.
After a yellow card for Michael Cuisance (60th minute), Eintracht played more than half an hour in superior numbers and still had to tremble for a long time. Goals from Johan Gomez (11') and Anton Donkor (61') gave the much more dangerous hosts a deserved lead on two occasions. However, VfL made the most of their only two chances to score in the match, twice through Cuisance (45.+1/foul penalty) and Erik Engelhardt (87./manual penalty), to fortunately equalize.
Despite all the drama, the match also showed how battered the two Lower Saxony rivals currently are. After taking the lead early on, Braunschweig pulled back a long way. However, the completely harmless VfL did not know what to do with the resulting possession, nor did Eintracht take advantage of their good counter-attacking opportunities. Braunschweig also became too passive again in the second half after going 2-1 up.
In the 2nd Bundesliga, Eintracht Braunschweig managed to secure a crucial win against their struggling rivals VfL Osnabrück. The final score was 3:2, with Ermin Bicakcic scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time, despite a lengthy video assistant review. The victory lifted Eintracht Braunschweig temporarily out of the relegation zone, while VfL Osnabrück remained rooted at the bottom of the Bundesliga 2 table.
