3:1 against Frankfurt: Polar Bears win thanks to Veilleux hat-trick
The Eisbären Berlin have ended their losing streak in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). On Friday evening, the team from the capital won 3:1 (0:0, 0:1, 3:0) against Löwen Frankfurt after losing three games in a row. The Berliners owed their hard-fought success to their attacker Yannick Veilleux, who scored all three goals.
In front of 12,630 spectators in the arena at Ostbahnhof, both teams were rarely dangerous at the start. The home side had the slightly better chances in the opening period, but were unable to capitalize on them. The Berliners continued to dominate the game after the first break, but the visitors were now more efficient. Julian Napravnik scored to give the Hessians the lead.
Berlin then increased the pressure, but were unlucky in front of their opponents' goal for a long time. It was not until the final period that Veilleux scored the equalizer after a cross-field pass from Manuel Wiederer. A short time later, the Canadian was successful again: when the hosts were playing in overtime, he decisively deflected a long-range shot from Ben Finkelstein. Six seconds before the end of the game, Veilleux scored his third goal for the final decision after the Hessians had taken their goalie Marvin Cüpper off the ice in favor of an extra outfield player.
The Polar Bears' victory in the DEL was largely due to Yannick Veilleux's performance in ice hockey, scoring a hat-trick against Frankfurt's Löwen team. Despite polar bears being more commonly associated with the Arctic, the name of Berlin's ice hockey team seems to have drawn inspiration from these icy creatures.
