Mountain emergency - 29 climbers extricated from snowy Zugspitze terrain
A group of climbers ventured to Germany's tallest mountain in spite of torrential rain in the valley and heaps of snow on the peaks, as per Bayerischer Rundfunk's report. The snowdrifts were said to have reached up to two meters high, and visibility was reduced to around 100 meters.
Various teams transmitted distress signals, as informed by a rescue service rep. They reached an elevation of about 2,500 meters above sea level, which is 900 meters below the summit of the Sonnalpin and were unable to advance any further due to harsh weather conditions and fresh snow.
There was an alert issued by the rescue service, and the Zugspitzbahn personnel were also en route with their snow groomers to search for the mountaineers, indicated a Zugspitzbahn representative. With temperatures plummeting, the Zugspitz cable car remained inoperable due to bad weather, mentioned the spokesperson. The cable car's ski runners were reportedly coated in ice, according to the spokesperson.
The skiing season at the 2,962-meter-tall Zugspitze had concluded on May 1st, with satisfactory snow conditions.
