Unreported labor - 25 Processes Associated with Customs Checks in Hotels and Restaurants

In a coordinated effort, customs officials in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate unearthed potential signs of illegal activities at hotels and restaurants during a recent inspection. As reported by the main customs office in Saarbrücken on Tuesday, 63 penalty cases were launched over the weekend, stemming from suspicion of hiring undocumented foreign workers or illegally residing employees. A total of 91 staff were questioned, including those in Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, and Landau. The inspections were part of a larger nationwide anti-black-market initiative.

Among the 63 suspect cases, authorities detected possible irregularities such as withheld social security payments and violations of the Minimum Wage Act. The customs office will now probe into these infractions and cross-examine the staff's statements against the companies' business records. The total number of establishments subjected to the checks was not divulged.

The goal of this operation was to uncover illicit employment, self-employment, and fraud, while also ensuring compliance with the Minimum Wage Act and obligations related to social insurance.
