Culture - 230-year-old piano resounds in Köthen Castle
The collection of historical keyboard instruments in Köthen Castle has received a valuable addition. This Sunday (December 3), the almost 230-year-old instrument will be played again during a reading, according to a spokeswoman for the castle. The grand piano was built in Mainz in 1794 during the siege and destruction of the city. This was written on a note that had been placed inside the instrument and was difficult to access, explained restorer Georg Ott. Nothing is known about the builder of the piano, Johan Lorentz Kleiner.

The addition to Köthen Castle's collection is a testament to the rich musical history of that region. This rare piano, built in 1794 during Mainz's siege, holds a significant place in the growth of piano-making in Europe. Despite the challenging circumstances under which it was created, the piano's quality has withstood the test of time. The restoration of the piano, including the discovery of a note from builder Johan Lorentz Kleiner, has added another intriguing chapter to the instrument's history. Interestingly, the piano's journey also echoes the complex history of the Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt regions.
