European Football Championship - 200 crimes so far during the European Championships in Baden-Württemberg
In spite of clashes with injured persons in Stuttgart's fan zone on Wednesday evening, Interior Minister Thomas Strobl expresses satisfaction with the first two weeks of the EM overall. "Fortunately, the police had to intervene rarely nationwide," he said on Thursday. Approximately 200 crimes such as thefts or bodily harm were recorded. This is very low considering the size of the event and the large number of people present, Strobl added. Additionally, about 25 drones were flying without permission in the air.
According to the police, two people were severely injured during the altercation near the Czech Republic vs. Turkey match. In total, three people were taken to the hospital. The police became aware of the incident in the crowd. There were disturbances. A 25-year-old suspect was later arrested. However, the motive remains unclear.
According to the Interior Ministry, nearly 200,000 people attended the four group stage matches in Stuttgart's stadium, with one more game - a quarterfinal - still to come. Over 17,000 police officers were deployed in Baden-Württemberg for the EM, with support from officers in Saarland, Bavaria, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the Federal Police, as well as over 90 foreign officers. In Stuttgart alone, over 14,500 police officers have been deployed, Strobl said.
The deployment is overshadowed by the death of a motorcycle policeman. The 61-year-old had been escorting the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, with the motorcycle squad of the Stuttgart Traffic Police on Monday to the airport. During the ride to the airport, a 69-year-old woman's car collided with the police motorcycle. The 61-year-old officer died, and a 27-year-old colleague was seriously injured.
