200,000 euros in damage caused by climate protection demonstrators

To make their road blockades more effective, climate activists also used a mixture of sand and glue to stick their hands on. In some cases, the police had to chisel up the asphalt to remove the blockaders. Who bears the costs?

200,000 euros in damage caused by climate protection demonstrators

With their protest and blockade actions, climate activists have already caused damage in Berlin this year at a total cost of more than 200,000 euros. This provisional sum is based on an answer from the Senate to an AfD inquiry with a list from the districts.

The state of Berlin and the districts are now trying to recover the money for road repairs and the cleaning of monuments from the climate protectors. However, the Senate announced: "So far, no costs incurred to repair damage and soiling in public spaces have been reimbursed by those responsible."

According to the report, Pankow (26,100 euros), Mitte (20,400 euros), Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (up to 20,000 euros) and Treptow-Köpenick (up to 16,500 euros) reported the highest amounts of damage. These were followed by Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (just under 3,000 euros) and Neukölln (300 euros). The other districts had no damage or did not provide any information. The costs for repairs to the highways after blockade and sticking actions are apparently not included in the figures because the federal government and not the state of Berlin is responsible for this.

In addition to the total of around 86,000 euros in damages listed by the districts, at least 115,000 euros have been added for cleaning the Brandenburg Gate from sprayed orange paint. The Senate is demanding the money back and intends to take the matter to court.

The districts of Mitte and Pankow have already demanded reimbursement of the costs from the perpetrators, the Senate announced. This is still pending in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and Treptow-Köpenick. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg did not provide any information on this. The prerequisite for this is "that the persons who have caused such damage could also be specifically identified and that the data of the persons concerned are made available to the responsible district office".

The ongoing climate demonstrations have led to significant damage in various districts of Berlin, with Pankow, Mitte, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, and Treptow-Köpenick incurring the highest costs. Unfortunately, the responsible parties have yet to reimburse any of these expenses, as mentioned by the Senate. The issue of recovering costs from those responsible for the crime of vandalism and damage to public property is currently being addressed in courts.
