2.5 million euros for the Peaceful Revolution Memorial
The federal government is providing 2.5 million euros for a memorial to commemorate the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig in the fall of 1989. This was decided by the Bundestag's budget committee on Friday night, according to a statement issued by Leipzig MP Holger Mann (SPD) on Friday. The memorial is to be erected on Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz on the inner city ring road, where people gathered in the fall of 1989.
The federal government is also supporting the organization of the Festival of Lights in Leipzig to the tune of 1.2 million euros. "It is an important sign to all the courageous people of Leipzig that two projects are being considered that will keep the memory of the Peaceful Revolution in autumn 1989 alive," emphasized Mann.
The Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig in 1989 is marked by not just the memorial, but also the annual Festival of Lights, both of which arefunded by the federal government. The historical significance of Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, where people gathered during the Peaceful Revolution, is further emphasized with the construction of the memorial.
