2.3 million people work from home
The coronavirus pandemic has given the topic of working from home a boost. A good one in five people now work from home at least some of the time. Almost two and a half million employees no longer travel to the office at all.
According to a media report, the number of employees working exclusively from home has almost quadrupled since the coronavirus pandemic. In 2022, 2.3 million employees in Germany will be working entirely from home, according to the Rheinische Post newspaper, which cited information from the Federal Ministry of Labor in response to a question from the Left Party. In 2019, before the pandemic, there were only 674,000.
According to the ministry, more and more employees in Germany are working from home occasionally - a trend that has also been reinforced by the coronavirus pandemic. While just over one in ten employees worked from home from time to time in 2019, this figure rose to around one in five (22.6%) last year - a total of 8.4 million.
Among employees aged between 15 and 24, the number of occasional home office users increased fourfold between 2019 and 2022, according to the survey. Among older employees aged between 55 and 64, it tripled during this period. In the age groups between 25 and 54, usage increased by more than 60 percent. The Ministry of Labor based its figures on data from the Federal Statistical Office's microcensus.
In view of the increase in working from home, Left Party politician Susanne Ferschl called for protective measures for a clear separation of work and leisure time. "Numerous studies show that employees are exposed to higher stress levels due to constant availability, increased flexibility requirements and work intensification," she said. Employers must therefore be held accountable through clear regulations such as working time documentation or a right not to be reachable.
