European Union - 2.1 million people in Brandenburg are urged to cast their ballots in upcoming local and European elections.

The exciting election year in Brandenburg kicks off on Sunday with the European and municipal elections. Over 2.1 million people are invited to cast their votes - either by mail or at the polling station. German citizens and those from other EU nations who are at least 16 years old and have their main or temporary address in Brandenburg are eligible to participate. These polls are seen as a sentiment test, roughly three-and-a-half months before the state legislative elections, although they're not directly comparable. Amid rising political tensions, the police are on high alert due to attacks on politicians.

For the European elections, Brandenburg's ballot paper features 34 election proposals. Thirteen local councils, along with the city councils of Potsdam, Brandenburg an der Havel, Cottbus and Frankfurt (Oder), and 408 municipal councils and city councils of the district-affiliated municipalities and cities, will be selected. Additionally, 271 honorary mayors and mayors of the district-affiliated cities and municipalities, as well as eight full-time mayors, more than 1300 local councilors and over 340 local mayors will also be chosen. The voters of the city of Werneuchen have the opportunity to remove Mayor Frank Kulicke (UWW) from office.
