TSV 1860 Munich got off to a rocky start in the new third-tier season. The "Lions", initially fielding six new signings, lost 0:1 (0:0) at home to 1. FC Saarbrücken in a clash of traditional clubs. Coach Argirios Giannikis' team was on par with last season's DFB-Pokal semi-finalist for much of the game but lacked the cutting edge in attack.

The goal of the match was scored by Patrick Schmidt (71') just five minutes after his introduction. The striker made his comeback after suffering a shin and fibula fracture in September 2023 while playing for SpVgg Unterhaching. Schmidt headed in a cross from the right side of Saarbrücken from six meters past Munich's captain Jesper Verlaat. Goalkeeper René Vollath, who was preferred over Marco Hiller, was left helpless.

Despite the strong performance from TSV 1860 Munich, their new signings struggled to find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-1 loss against 1. FC Saarbrücken. In the second half of the game, Patrick Schmidt, who had recently returned from injury, scored the winning goal for Saarbrücken against his former team.
