- 185 Lyme disease infections so far this year in MV
Around 185 people in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have already been infected with Lyme disease this year. The State Office for Health and Social Affairs announced this on Monday. Alone in the past week, 21 infections were registered. The NDR had previously reported this.
Especially during walks in the woods, caution is advised, as ticks are often found on the grass, it was said. A tick bite itself is usually harmless, but disease-causing pathogens can be transmitted - including the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which can cause Lyme disease. After a walk, one should check one's skin for ticks and remove the small animals without crushing them. A Lyme disease infection is recognizable by a red ring around the puncture site.
In the summer months, reports increase as more people are out in woods and meadows. Lyme disease is a notifiable infectious disease and is treated with antibiotics.
Implementing proper health and safety measures is crucial during outdoor activities, especially in forests, due to the prevalence of ticks. Regularly checking for ticks after engaging in woodland walks and removing them carefully can help prevent the transmission of disease-causing pathogens, such as Borrelia burgdorferi, which can lead to Lyme disease.
