Strange new world - 150 authors at the Berlin Literature Festival
With approximately 150 authors from 50 countries, the Literature Festival Berlin will go into its 24th edition in September under the motto "Strange New World" ("Seltsame neue Welt"). The program for the festival from the 5th to the 14th of September includes 23 book premieres, where the new works of the respective authors and authors will be presented to the public for the first time.
Among the announced authors and authors are Rachel Cusk, Olivia Laing, Mithu Sanyal, Elif Shafak, Aleida Assmann, Ben Okri, or Paul Lynch.
Barley and de Maizière discuss the AfD
Under the title "What can be done against the AfD?" is a discussion event with the EU-MP and SPD politician Katarina Barley, the Left politician Katja Kipping, and the former Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière planned. The discussion round is about a week after the state elections in Thuringia and Saxony.
Catching the Zeitgeist literarily
As festival curator, the Nigerian-born and US-residing author Helon Habila sees the Zeitgeist between pandemic, wars, and climate change captured literarily with the motto.
The team around Festival Director Lavinia Frey marks five focal points in the program. Among them are topics such as "Collective Traumas and Experiences of Violence", "Israel, Palestine, and Germany", "LGBTQ+" (abbreviation for Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transsexuals, Intersexuals, Queers and other identities), "Environment and Climate", or "Freedom and Human Rights".
Book given as a gift
The youth program, designed for adolescents, is reportedly planned from the 9th to the 18th of September, slightly delayed due to school holidays. The workshops offered there will be free of charge for the first time, and all participants will receive a book as a gift.
