- 15-year-old dies in Baden-Württemberg from lightning strike
A 15-year-old was fatally injured when lightning struck in Welzheim, Rems-Murr district, Baden-Württemberg. Along with another teenager, he was under a tree on a hill during a thunderstorm on Wednesday evening, as reported by police on Thursday. The second teenager was severely injured. Emergency services took him to a hospital.
In general, it's dangerous to be outside during a thunderstorm. Lightning tends to strike high, isolated points in the landscape, such as power lines, towers, or single trees. It's therefore advisable to stay away from such high objects. The German Weather Service (DWD) also advises against being near bodies of water or metal fences during a thunderstorm.
Unfortunately, the second teenager was also involved in an accident during the thunderstorm, suffering severe injuries from a lightning strike. Due to the hazardous conditions, it's crucial to avoid being outside under such circumstances.
