Public service - 13,000 employees take part in warning strike

On Wednesday, Berlin schools once again had to cancel classes and close. Thousands of teachers and school employees responded to a warning strike call by several trade unions and walked off the job, according to the Education and Science Union (GEW) this morning.

All employees who are paid according to the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states, which is currently being negotiated nationwide, were called out. This includes educators, teachers, university employees and social workers in youth, health and social services. The Verdi trade union and the GdP police union also took part in the warning strike.

In the early morning, strikers gathered at Ernst-Reuter-Platz and marched towards Kurfürstendamm, where the conference of labor and social ministers was taking place at the same time. There was a rally on site.

The bargaining parties will meet this Thursday and Friday for the third round of negotiations in Potsdam. Among other things, the unions are demanding a 10.5 percent increase in pay, but at least 500 euros per month for a collective agreement period of twelve months. For trainees, the increase should amount to 200 euros. For the states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen, the unions are also demanding a city-state bonus of 300 euros.
