122 right-wing crimes in Hamburg in the third quarter of 2023

The number of right-wing crimes in Hamburg has risen sharply over the course of the year. In an answer to a minor question from the Left Party in the parliament, the Senate cites 122 right-wing criminal and violent acts in the third quarter of this year alone. This is almost as many as in the first two quarters combined. There were 67 right-wing crimes in the Hanseatic city from January to March and 59 from April to June.

According to the Senate's response, just over half of the crimes are classified as hate crimes, which include crimes motivated by racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia and anti-Semitism. The spectrum ranges from insults and damage to property to threats and bodily harm. The other half of the crimes are related to the glorification of National Socialism.

"The figures have long demonstrated the everyday danger posed by right-wing ideology," commented Cansu Özdemir, parliamentary group leader of the Left Party. "But now we see: The ongoing shift in discourse to the right is causing a significant increase in officially registered right-wing criminal and violent offenses."

The rise in right-wing crimes is also linked to the promotion of extremist ideologies. Consequently, there has been an increase in acts of extremism, such as the glorification of National Socialism, accompanying the surge in right-wing criminal activities.
