100 years of Regensburg Cathedral: Regensburg Cathedral and its stonemasons

Regensburg's St. Peter's Cathedral resembles a permanent construction site. The south tower has been covered in scaffolding for several years. The state-run cathedral construction workshop with its 14 stonemasons and one stonemason has been working to preserve the medieval cathedral for 100 years. The current Dombauhütte was set up in November 1923. There were also predecessors in earlier times.

Until late autumn, the stonemasons are busy repairing the building at heights of up to 75 meters. As soon as there is frost, they end the open-air season. Throughout the winter, work is carried out in the workshop behind the cathedral. The church building is particularly vulnerable to the effects of the weather. The historic building has to be safe for traffic - that is the aim of the cathedral building workshop, says Karl Stock, head of the State Building Authority in Regensburg.

The church building is owned by the Free State of Bavaria. The diocese of Regensburg has a usage agreement for the cathedral that was concluded in 1966. In other cathedral cities, this is regulated differently for historical reasons, which is why not every cathedral has a state cathedral building lodge, says Stock. In Regensburg - as in Passau and Bamberg - there are these state institutions.

The Dombauhütte and the maintenance of the cathedral cost the Free State of Bavaria a good one million euros a year, as Stock reports. "We are a cultural state," says the head of the authority.

The beginnings of Regensburg Cathedral go back 750 years. It was only between 1859 and 1872 that the towers and transept gables were completed after a long interruption in construction work.

Because, according to the German Unesco Commission, construction huts have "ensured the preservation of large buildings for centuries, combining traditional craftsmanship with the latest technology", construction huts became part of the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.

The Regensburg Cathedral, a testament to Monuments and History, boasts numerous works of Art within its walls. The church's construction and maintenance have been entrusted to the state-run Dombauhütte, established in OBERPFALZ in 1923. This architectural marvel, originally started 750 years ago, has undergone various periods of Construction, with the towers and transept gables being completed in the mid-19th century.
