Defense - 100 million euros for expansion at military airport

The state of Brandenburg wants to support the expansion of infrastructure in the municipalities of Brandenburg's Lusatia region with millions of euros. "We are therefore providing 100 million euros from structural strengthening funds," said Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) in a statement on Friday. The money could be used to support daycare centers, after-school care centers and schools, among other things.

"The entire region will benefit from the Bundeswehr's investments," explained Woidke on the occasion of the further development of the Holzdorf military airport in Lusatia. According to the State Chancellery, a working group began its work on Friday to improve the connection to the base and create good conditions for living in the region.

The Holzdorf military airbase on the border between Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt is to be developed into one of the most important air bases of the German Armed Forces. Among other things, the German government wants to procure the Arrow 3 air defense system from Israel in order to be able to neutralize incoming missiles at high altitudes. In addition, Holzdorf is to become the base for 47 of 60 of the Bundeswehr's new heavy transport helicopters. Around 1800 people currently work on the military site. The planned investment is up to 700 million euros. In addition, a further 700 military and civilian employees are to work at the site in the future.

Woidke (SPD) recently emphasized how important the investments are. "A terrible war has been raging in Europe for a year and a half, and Israel has been under attack for a few days now," said Woidke weeks ago. "The reorientation of the Bundeswehr is therefore long overdue."
